It’s a craze that’s taken off all over the world, but is just reaching Palm Cove… SUP YOGA!
Yep, Yoga on a Stand Up Paddleboard.
You’ve seen it on Instagram, now its time to give it a try for yourself.
Hartig Yoga have teamed up with Pacific Watersports to bring SUP Yoga Classes in Palm Cove, on Drift Resort‘s Lagoon Pool (the biggest pool we have ever seen!).
Why is SUP Yoga so great?
SUP yoga will give a different dimension to your yoga practice. Practicing asanas (yoga postures) on the surface of the water is much different than on solid ground. Whilst the board is solid, the surface it is resting on isn’t. When doing yoga on the water, your body has to work a bit harder to stay in the asanas, muscles tend to be tenser (to stop you from falling in!) and you need to be more aware of your core center (your center of gravity). Poses that you have done hundreds of times on land seem a whole lot different when practiced on water! But whilst it’s a physically stronger practice on the water, the relaxation elements are also increased. Floating on water whilst relaxing in Savasana makes it a whole lot easier to relax, let go and go with the flow 🙂
Sup Yoga requires a little more mental focus than yoga on land too. The practice of yoga is a moving meditation. As well as benefiting the body in many ways, yoga has a powerful effect on the mind and our state of well being. Whilst we may all try to be completely focused on our asana and breath whilst practising on land, its often easy for the mind to do its own thing. When on the water, the asana demands our complete concentration and the practice instantly gains the attention it deserves!
